Denied a slice of history

My perfect record remains intact.

I've never seen a major-league, no-hitter in person.

I've been going to games for about 36 years, including the last 14 as a reporter. I've seen somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 big-league games in person.

No no-nos.

Brewers right-hander Dave Bush flirted with a no-hitter against Toronto today at Miller Park. He was perfect through five innings, and then walked Gregg Zaun to open the sixth. Bush didn't allow a hit until the top of the eighth, when Lyle Overbay -- the man he was traded to Milwaukee for -- tripled.

"I'd rather (the hit) be on a nice, clean line drive than a swinging bunt," Bush said later.

Bush was justifiably proud about his effort and seemed only mildly disappointed that the he didn't get a no-hitter or a complete game.

But, I was bummed.

The planets seemed to be aligned. The Brewers are on a roll, with the second-best record in baseball during the past month. They were looking to sweep the Blue Jays and got off to an early lead (that they nearly choked away).

Per baseball tradition, Bush received the silent treatment from teammates in the dugout.

He said that was not unusual.

"I usually keep to myself when I'm pitching," Bush said. "There's an equipment room down the hallway (from the dugout) that I like to sit in. Most people don't say much to me.

"Everyone left me alone, but that's probably typical."

Nothing about a no-hitter is typical. It's one of those "tell your grandkids about" moments. I've seen a number of amazing things on baseball fields across the country, but I'm still waiting to see a no-hitter.
